Concert Rescheduled

From Dr. Cavener, krcavener@spsmail.org
I just received the final word from Dr. Christy:

The Wilson’s Creek Show Choir Concert has been postponed from tonight, Tuesday, December 10th, until Monday, December 16th at 5:30.

There will be a DRESS REHEARSAL Thursday morning, December 12, at 7:30 a.m. sharp (since we missed our dress rehearsal today)... and the Day Tour will proceed as scheduled that same day from 9 to 2. Students should wear their concert attire (black pants, shirts, ties, scarves). Students are not to bring electronics, backpacks, or purses on the bus.

Students must have their official permission slip form turned in to get on the bus. Therefore, only students who have turned in their signed permission form will go on the field trip. Students may bring no more than $10 for lunch or they may bring a sack lunch. We are expecting students to make wise lunch choices, free from sugar and caffeine. We appreciate parents reminding students of appropriate lunch options at the Battlefield Mall Food Court.

Stay safe and warm!

Re: adding splashes of color

Great question! If the splashes of color are earrings, headbands, or other jewelry, that's fine! Colorful shoes are also fine! Thank you for asking! Dr. Cavener

Clarificaton about what to wear

Thanks so much for the question... let me clarify about what the singers are to wear...

We are not ordering shirts this year. In years past, the singers wore t-shirts and jeans, but after talking with some students and parents, we decided to go with a "snazzier" look this year.

All students have until the first performance in December to buy or borrow some black pants and a black shirt. These are not provided; however, if buying these items become a financial hardship for anyone, please let me know and we will help you get what you need.

The pants and shirts need to be as nice as possible. If the pants are jeans, they need to be nice and really dark black.
Dark black athletic pants are fine if they don't have any design (stripes down the side of the legs, etc.)

Boys need a shirt with a collar because of the neck ties that have been ordered.
The girls' black shirts do not need a collar. If they already have a black shirt with a design, consider turning it inside out?

Sparkly sashes (for the girls) and neck ties (for the boys) have been bought out of the Show Choir fund. The ties are bright colors (yellow, green, purple) and the girls sashes are pink or silver. The sashes will be tied below the waist, off to the side.
These items have arrived but will not be given out until closer to the performance date. These items are for the singers to keep; they were bought with a portion of the fee paid by the student.

Students who have a special role in a performance (such as Rudolph, Mrs. Santa, Frosty, Santa, etc.) will go into the hall and slip their costume or accessories on over their black outfit. Then when their part in the show is over they will go back into the hall and slip out of their costume and come back to the risers as before. In other words, on the Day Tour, there isn't time for students to run to the bathroom to completely change clothes during a show; there also isn't enough privacy!

Let me know if you have any other questions! Dr. Kim Cavener

Auditions for Special Roles; Change in Scheduling
Dr. Kim Cavener, Director
October 14, 2013

Update: Auditions have begun for special roles in the holiday production, “Christmas Time is Here.” It’s wonderful to have so many talented students interested in special roles! However, due to the overwhelming interest in auditions, it will be necessary to hold auditions on mornings other than Tuesdays, otherwise it will take 4 or 5 entire rehearsals to complete them all, and we cannot sacrifice that much rehearsal time. I regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience. Therefore, for students who wish to audition for a special role or roles, please make sure you mark your audition date on your calendar and make every effort to come to your audition or auditions on the following date or dates, on time, with your script and a pencil for a quick, painless audition.

I understand that you do not yet know the role or roles well. When you arrive to your audition, I will show you what to sing (or say) and will help you, as I am looking for POTENTIAL, not perfection! In a couple of weeks, those who get their names drawn for a North Pole Live role will be loaned a North Pole Live practice Cd to learn your part. Furthermore, a couple of extra rehearsals will be scheduled before school in November for specific roles (for example: The Beach Boys, Rudolph and the Back-up Singers; Mrs. Santa and her Back-up Singers, etc.)

Auditions
SILVER BELLS: 8:20 a.m. (after choir) in the music room; Tuesday, October 8 AND 15 (today is the last day to audition for “Silver Bells”).

NARRATOR: (any narrator part in the entire show), you will read Narrator 1 no matter which one you want, just to keep auditions simple. Circle which Narrator part you prefer on your slip. Auditions for Narrator is FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 8:15 AM in the music room

THE BEACH BOYS (in The North Pole Live Section), and/or “You Raise Me Up” solo (first verse with Cd with voices)… If you audition for The Beach Boys, you will sing a little bit of “Little Saint Nick” –with the Cd (with voices for the audition) “Well way up North where the air gets cold there’s a tale about Christmas that you’ve all been told……. working out on his sled.” For the performance, The Beach Boys will dress “Hawaiian or Summer-like” (bright colored shirt and sunglasses, etc.) Auditions for the BEACH BOYS or the “You Raise…” solo are TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 8:20 a.m. (after choir) in the music room

ELVIS: (in The North Pole Live Section), those auditioning for Elvis will sing a little bit of “Frosty the Snowman” in Elvis-style showing your best Elvis voice and moves for the audition. Audition for Elvis is THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 8:15 a.m. in the music room.

Rockin’ Rudolph AND the Back-up Singers: Those auditioning will sing a little bit of “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” in rock-style with the Cd (with voices) and show some movement (how would you get into your role?) For the performance, Rudolph and back-up singers will dress as rock or rap stars as much as possible. Auditions for these roles are Friday, October 25 at 8:15 a.m. in the music room

Mrs. Diva Santa and the 70’s Back Up Singers: (North Pole Live) Those auditioning will sing a little of “Santa Baby” with the Cd (with voices), acting like a 70’s Diva. For the performance, singers will dress 70’s disco as much as possible. Auditions for Mrs. Santa and back-up singers are Wednesday, October 23, 8:00 a.m. in the music room. WINGS students, please talk to Dr. Cavener about coming Monday morning, October 21 at 8:00 a.m. Soldier (no speaking or singing)

The soldier is a part of a “Human Video” (skit to music) during “You Raise Me Up.” For auditions, he/she will be alone, feeling sad and lonely, looking at pictures of friends and family. Then a group comes to the door with a care package… his/her mood lightens and becomes happy and joyful. I will play the song and those auditioning can show me how they would convey these “feelings” to the audience with their face and body language.

*A couple of Show Choir student volunteers who take piano lessons and read music well will be selected to play the glockenspiel on “Somewhere in my Memory.” We will set up a time to practice and I will send home music. Glockenspiels cannot leave the school.

** Students who miss their audition due to illness or emergency MUST have a parent contact Dr. Cavener within 24 hours of the missed audition to reschedule a new audition time; otherwise, auditions may not be rescheduled. Thank you for understanding our need to finish auditions by October 29 to provide us with 5 remaining rehearsals before we perform in December.

Poster Copmmittee Meeting Friday Morning, 9.27

There is a Show Choir Poster Committee Meeting this Friday morning (September 27) at 8:15 a.m. in the music room. I realize it is short notice! If you cannot make arrangements to be there or if you cannot arrive as early as 8:15, no worries! Come to the music room when you can!  We need a poster to announce the upcoming Show Choir auditions (for special roles for the December concerts). The poster materials will be provided.

Auditions for special roles will be during the regular Show Choir rehearsal time beginning on October 8 and continuing throughout the next rehearsal or two depending on how many singers audition. Students do NOT need to memorize anything to audition.

By the December Concerts, students will need a nice pair of solid black pants and nice long sleeved solid black shirt. The colorful accessories will be provided from the Show Choir fund (bright scarves for girls to tie around their waist and neck ties for the boys). Please contact Dr. Cavener ASAP if this poses a financial hardship for anyone.
