Auditions for Special Roles; Change in Scheduling
Dr. Kim Cavener, Director
October 14, 2013
Update: Auditions have begun for special roles in the holiday production, “Christmas Time is Here.” It’s wonderful to have so many talented students interested in special roles! However, due to the overwhelming interest in auditions, it will be necessary to hold auditions on mornings other than Tuesdays, otherwise it will take 4 or 5 entire rehearsals to complete them all, and we cannot sacrifice that much rehearsal time. I regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience. Therefore, for students who wish to audition for a special role or roles, please make sure you mark your audition date on your calendar and make every effort to come to your audition or auditions on the following date or dates, on time, with your script and a pencil for a quick, painless audition.
I understand that you do not yet know the role or roles well. When you arrive to your audition, I will show you what to sing (or say) and will help you, as I am looking for POTENTIAL, not perfection! In a couple of weeks, those who get their names drawn for a North Pole Live role will be loaned a North Pole Live practice Cd to learn your part. Furthermore, a couple of extra rehearsals will be scheduled before school in November for specific roles (for example: The Beach Boys, Rudolph and the Back-up Singers; Mrs. Santa and her Back-up Singers, etc.)
Auditions
SILVER BELLS: 8:20 a.m. (after choir) in the music room; Tuesday, October 8 AND 15 (today is the last day to audition for “Silver Bells”).
NARRATOR: (any narrator part in the entire show), you will read Narrator 1 no matter which one you want, just to keep auditions simple. Circle which Narrator part you prefer on your slip. Auditions for Narrator is FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 8:15 AM in the music room
THE BEACH BOYS (in The North Pole Live Section), and/or “You Raise Me Up” solo (first verse with Cd with voices)… If you audition for The Beach Boys, you will sing a little bit of “Little Saint Nick” –with the Cd (with voices for the audition) “Well way up North where the air gets cold there’s a tale about Christmas that you’ve all been told……. working out on his sled.” For the performance, The Beach Boys will dress “Hawaiian or Summer-like” (bright colored shirt and sunglasses, etc.) Auditions for the BEACH BOYS or the “You Raise…” solo are TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 8:20 a.m. (after choir) in the music room
ELVIS: (in The North Pole Live Section), those auditioning for Elvis will sing a little bit of “Frosty the Snowman” in Elvis-style showing your best Elvis voice and moves for the audition. Audition for Elvis is THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 8:15 a.m. in the music room.
Rockin’ Rudolph AND the Back-up Singers: Those auditioning will sing a little bit of “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” in rock-style with the Cd (with voices) and show some movement (how would you get into your role?) For the performance, Rudolph and back-up singers will dress as rock or rap stars as much as possible. Auditions for these roles are Friday, October 25 at 8:15 a.m. in the music room
Mrs. Diva Santa and the 70’s Back Up Singers: (North Pole Live) Those auditioning will sing a little of “Santa Baby” with the Cd (with voices), acting like a 70’s Diva. For the performance, singers will dress 70’s disco as much as possible. Auditions for Mrs. Santa and back-up singers are Wednesday, October 23, 8:00 a.m. in the music room. WINGS students, please talk to Dr. Cavener about coming Monday morning, October 21 at 8:00 a.m. Soldier (no speaking or singing)
The soldier is a part of a “Human Video” (skit to music) during “You Raise Me Up.” For auditions, he/she will be alone, feeling sad and lonely, looking at pictures of friends and family. Then a group comes to the door with a care package… his/her mood lightens and becomes happy and joyful. I will play the song and those auditioning can show me how they would convey these “feelings” to the audience with their face and body language.
*A couple of Show Choir student volunteers who take piano lessons and read music well will be selected to play the glockenspiel on “Somewhere in my Memory.” We will set up a time to practice and I will send home music. Glockenspiels cannot leave the school.
** Students who miss their audition due to illness or emergency MUST have a parent contact Dr. Cavener within 24 hours of the missed audition to reschedule a new audition time; otherwise, auditions may not be rescheduled. Thank you for understanding our need to finish auditions by October 29 to provide us with 5 remaining rehearsals before we perform in December.
